Legacy

"I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well."
2 Timothy 1:5

I was touched by this verse at the beginning of Paul's second letter to Timothy. Our God often works in families. It is possible that Lois never saw her grandson grow into a faithful man. But Paul recognizes that same faith. He's seen it before. It seems Paul shares this with Timothy as a means of encouragement. His mother and his grandmother have been faithful and the same God who held onto them now holds him. Timothy has been entrusted with a "good deposit," that legacy of faith.

Like Timothy, I can look back just a few generations and see the deep roots of genuine faith. I am walking in their legacy, having been given a "good deposit." I have assurance that the deposit is secure not because of me but because "I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me."

But the beauty of that deposit is the hope that years from now someone may tell my daughters' children  stories of a faith that has passed through generations all the way to them and a God who has been faithful to our family. May they be encouraged.
