Resolutions and the "Most Important" Jobs

In the spirit of the New Year, I am setting a few resolutions for 2011 on behalf of my daughters.  In no particular order, here they are...

1.  Teach Them How to Make Their Beds
2.  Help Them Memorize the Fruits of the Spirit
3.  Consistently Pray for Them Every Morning
4.  Teach Them the Hymns on their Hymn CD
5.  Insist that they Obey "All the Way, Right Away, and with a Happy Heart"  (From Don't Make Me Count to Three, which I highly recommend)

Nothing monumental about my little list, but it's helpful to me to have a few things in black and white.

This week I have been working with Hallie on her "two most important jobs in the world." (She's a sucker for hyperbole.)  I tell her that her two most important jobs are 1.  Obey Mommy and Daddy, and 2.  Be Kind to Her Sister and Brother.  These two jobs are, to her, quite monumental and beyond her consistent achievement.  But I believe they are the Biblical priorities for her life right now and that teaching her to obey and to be kind are building blocks for her growth.  Focusing these goals into her two main "jobs" has helped prioritize obedience and kindness for her.

So, what are your goals for your kids this year?

  1. You know, it's funny - those are the two things we have really tried to teach our nephews. And they're 12 and 8! I guess it's part of the human condition to struggle with 1)not being in control and 2)honoring one another above yourselves in brotherly love. So good for your precious kids that you're starting so early.
