For Any Procrastinators Out There

For a couple of years now I have had a little (now, a weathered) piece of paper under my computer monitor at work.  Here's what it says:

"No unwelcome tasks become any the less unwelcome by putting them off till tomorrow.  It is only when they are behind us and done, that we begin to find that there is a sweetness to be tasted afterwards, and that the remembrance of unwelcome duties unhesitatingly done is welcome and pleasant.  Accomplished, they are full of blessing, and there is a smile on their faces as they leave us.  Undone, they stand threatening and disturbing our tranquility, and hindering our communion with God.  If there be lying before you any bit of work from which you shrink, go straight up to it, and do it at once.  The only way to get rid of it is to do it."

--Alexander MacLaren

Can you tell I struggle with procrastination?  I'm sure the readers of this blog have it together far better than I, but I figured a little motivation couldn't hurt just in case.

The coolest part about this quote, to me, is that its author lived from 1826 to 1910 (and according to good ol' Wikipedia, was "an English non-conformist minister of Scottish origin").  Apparently procrastination isn't a new struggle. It's been disquieting spirits for more than a hundred years at least.

  2. I definitely struggle with procrastination-You are not the only one!!! I agree completely with "Accomplished, they are full of blessing, and there is a smile on their faces as they leave us." Why that exact thought doesn't sink in while I put off another task is beyond my understanding.
